Everyday Iconic

Nov. 10, 2008 - Feb. 2, 2009

Featuring Magnum Photographers Rene Burri + Bruce Davidson + Bert Glinn + Leonard Freed + Guy Le Querrec + Denis Stock w/ Canadian artists Karin Bubas + Derek Root + Laura Vickerson Drake's winter exhibition features extraordinary photographs selected from Magnum, the esteemed international photo co-operative agency that has produced some of the most iconic images in the world. Admire rarely exhibited photographs of celebrities, artists and performers such as Nina Simone, Martin Luther King and Helen Frankenthaller in quiet reflection, while more modest individuals are seen reveling in extraordinary moments. These photographs are complemented by select works from celebrated Canadian artists, including Derek Root's stunning paintings of conductor Herbert von Karian. Karin Bubas' photograph graces the back lobby in shadowy mystery, as a young woman is seen stepping into darkness, while Laura Vickerson's fabric-based installation is as delicate as a snowflake, with discarded scraps of paper sewn onto gauze, transforming gum wrappers, coffee cups and labels into an extraordinary textile. This exhibition was made possible through a partnership with Magnum Photos, NYC. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Monte Clark Gallery, Toronto, and Grolsch for their continued support of Drake's Public Spaces Exhibitions.
