Since 1918, Bollywood billboard artists have developed a unique style to attract Indian audiences to the movie screens. Decorating town centres and hi-rises in India, these billboards reflect its rapidly changing society and quest for fantasy + escape. Globalization, economic restructuring, technological developments and changing cultural expectations have all but rendered this art a thing of the past, and now only a few billboard painters remain as they are being replaced by computerized imagery.
Tamasha will take the journey full circle, back to the public, while maintaining the new celebratory spirit of a dying art being revived in a different cultural context.
Presented by Anoush Gallery in partnership with the Drake Hotel and the Design Exchange.
