Permanent Collection

Our permanent art collection has been a labour of love since we first opened our doors.
From Drake’s inception, promoting and sharing art has been integral to our vision, and over the last few years we’ve had the pleasure of working directly with extraordinary artists to develop site-specific installations throughout all our venues. Expect to see works that range from spare conceptual installations to site-specific murals to kinetic sculptures.

The collection is grounded in contemporary Canadian art and augmented with select works by artists outside of Canada to create an international context for the collection.

Matt and Susan Gorbet - HEARTBEAT OF THE DRAKE (2005)

(Lobby) Detail: Matt and Susan Gorbet, HEARTBEAT OF THE DRAKE, 2005, steel pipe, microphones, electronics, 213.4 x 58.4 cm/84 x 23 in

Matt and Susan Gorbet are new media artists who work with robotics and electronics to create site specific works. The duo often creates interactive sculptures that adjust depending on the room occupants. What looks like an antique gas meter is actually an interactive piece created specifically for the Drake. Heartbeat of the Drake is a sculpture with a microphone that shows the noise level of the lobby, depending on how many people are in the room.

Their work can be seen in the international airport of San Jose, Schulich School of Business, York University, the Royal Ontario Museum, San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation Distillery District, amongst others.
