Drake + TIFF Future Projections present Shaun Gladwell

Sept. 4, 2014 - Sept. 14, 2014

For the seventh year in a row, the Drake Hotel is an official off-site for the Toronto International Film Festival's Future Projections, a city-wide programme dedicated to taking the moving image from the cinema to the gallery — and beyond.

The Drake's Future Projections programme will be dedicated to screening across all Drake properties the work of Shaun Gladwell. The Australian-born, London-based video artist portrays cultural figures like the skateboarder and freestyle BMX rider in self-described performative landscapes to hypnotic effect.

At the Hotel we have the artist's newest work, BMX Channel, created as a commission for the De La Warr Pavilion in Sussex, England. Here a solitary BMX rider is seen executing a series of tricks along the seawall, under a white Edwardian pavilion. The footage is slowed to create a dance-like elegance, allowing the viewer to appreciate the delicacy of each twist of the handle bar and push of the pedal.

Visit the Drake One Fifty during TIFF to see the artist's newest piece BMX Channel or the Lightbox for Midnight Traceur
