French Fries vs. Chips: A Deep Fried History

Do you ever wonder who invented the burger's best accessory? We're not talking buns, silly- we're talking fries! Whether you call them chips and enjoy in a newspaper bed or put ketchup on them like the boy with glasses, fries have become a western staple.

French Fries' name dates all the way back to the 19th century! In 1856, the expression "French Fried Potatoes" was printed in E. Warren's work "Cookery for Maids of All Work." Later on, the notion of "deep-fried" foods became colloquial with the rise of chicken and onion ring dishes. If we look across the pond, chips (aka French Fries, UK-style) first appeared at Oldham's Tommyfield Market in 1860. Thicker than other forms of the salty snack, chips are usually 10 and 15 mm (3/8–1/2 inches) wide. Today it seems like there's a new fry variation every couple of years, not to mention restaurants that exclusively serve poutine!
