Part of what's great about my role at the Drake is that it allows for a fair dose of playful thinking. When the opportunity arose to reinvent one of our beloved store-front spaces, I was inspired by our Artist in Residence program and the energy and vibrancy that comes with artists working on site. I wanted to extend the creative energy to our neighbourhood: from that, Drake Lab was born.
Drake Lab is a project that officially launches in December with a project to support our What's In The Box, annual music festival. Come January, we're offering up street-side studio space to Toronto's cultural organizations for two-week stints, and the best part is that the space its FREE. Whether you are a dance company looking for rehearsal space, or are preparing for an exhibition and need a space to work, Drake Lab may just be your answer. It's a simple space, approx 450 sq ft with white walls and limited furniture (cafe tables and chairs as well as a comfy sofa); a truly great space to let your imagination run wild.
We're welcoming submissions from arts organizations, collectives and collaborators to use Drake Lab as the home base for their next project. So why not put some thoughts together and send them to mia@thedrakehotel.ca?
Send us what ya got!
Please keep in mind that preference will be given to groups that involve the community and/or have a presentation or performance in the space at the end of the term.
